How to Remove a Tree Stump: Four Methods, Honestly Compared
There are four real ways to deal with a stump and two that people try anyway. Grinding takes 20 minutes to an hour on a typical garden stump and costs from R650. Digging it out is free but takes most of a weekend and leaves a crater. Chemical rotting costs almost nothing and takes 12 to 24 months. Which one is right depends almost entirely on what you intend to do with the ground afterwards.

The two that do not work
Can you burn a stump out?
No. A stump smoulders rather than burns, often for days, and it burns downward along the roots where nobody can see it. In a Cape summer, on a fire-interface property, this is how people start a wildfire. It also rarely removes the root plate.
Does Epsom salt or a bag over the stump do anything?
Not meaningfully. Both are variations on waiting for the stump to rot, and neither speeds it up enough to matter. If the plan is to rot it, a proper stump treatment applied to a fresh cut surface works far better than a household remedy applied to a weathered one.
Choosing
When is grinding the right call?
When something is going on that ground — grass, paving, a new tree, a wall. Grinding takes the stump below grade in one visit and leaves chips that can be raked out or dug in. It is also the only method that reliably stops a coppicing species regrowing from the collar.
When is digging it out worth it?
Small stumps, under about 150mm across, on soft ground with nothing built nearby. Above that the root plate makes hand digging disproportionate work, and on Cape Flats sand the hole collapses as fast as you open it.
