How deep do you grind tree stumps?
Our Vermeer SC362 and SC252 grinders remove stumps to 200–300mm below the original ground surface — sufficient for lawn turfing, paving, or replanting in the same spot. For deep construction (foundations, driveways), we can grind to 400mm on request. The hole is then backfilled with the wood chip mulch produced during grinding. Note: surface roots extending outward from the stump are not automatically included — let us know if you need these ground too.
Will the tree grow back after stump grinding?
For most species — no. Stump grinding destroys the main cambium and disrupts the root system enough to prevent regrowth. Exceptions are vigorous sprouters: blue gum (Eucalyptus), Port Jackson (Acacia saligna), and black wattle (Acacia mearnsii). For these species, we apply Garlon 4 (Triclopyr 480g/L herbicide) immediately after grinding to the stump face and exposed roots — this eliminates regrowth in over 95% of cases. A follow-up visit at 3 months is recommended for these species to treat any new shoots.
Can you grind a stump in an enclosed garden with a small gate?
Yes. Our Vermeer SC252 compact grinder tracks are 610mm wide — it fits through standard 650mm pedestrian gates and can operate in gardens as small as 2m × 2m. For very confined spaces (under 650mm access), we can use a hydraulic hand-held attachment for stumps up to 300mm. We will assess access during the free on-site quote and select the appropriate equipment.
Is it better to grind or chemically remove a stump?
Mechanical stump grinding is faster, cleaner, and more reliable than chemical removal. Chemical products (potassium nitrate-based stump destroyers) take 4–6 weeks to soften the wood and still require physical removal afterwards. They are also ineffective on alien invasive stumps with vigorous root systems. Grinding provides a ready-to-use surface within 2 hours. Chemical treatment is only recommended where access for a grinder is truly impossible — which is rare with our compact SC252.
What do I do with the wood chip mulch after grinding?
The wood chips produced during grinding are excellent garden mulch — they suppress weeds, retain moisture, and slowly improve soil structure as they decompose. We typically backfill the stump hole with the chips and leave the excess in a pile for you to spread. If you don’t want the chips, we’ll load and remove them at no extra charge. For alien invasive species (blue gum, Port Jackson), chips are treated with herbicide and removed to prevent seed germination.
How long after tree felling should I grind the stump?
Stumps can be ground immediately after felling — and we recommend combining both operations in a single visit (10% discount applies). However, stumps can be ground at any stage after felling. Older, drier stumps are actually slightly easier to grind as the wood is less dense. There is no urgency unless the stump is from an alien invasive species, in which case immediate Triclopyr treatment is important to prevent root sprouting within the first 30 seconds after cutting.
Can I build a patio or lay paving over a ground stump?
Yes — stumps ground to 200–300mm are ready for paving within 2–4 weeks once the backfilled chips have settled and compressed. For load-bearing paving (driveways, heavy patios), we recommend grinding to 300mm and replacing the chip backfill with clean compacted fill or G5 road-base material. For lightweight paving or turfing, the chip mulch backfill is sufficient. We advise all clients on the appropriate depth for their intended use during the quotation visit.
Does stump grinding damage underground pipes or cables?
Risk of underground service damage exists but is very low with proper pre-work assessment. We check with clients for known pipe and cable routes before grinding, and probe-sound the stump area before commencing. Water pipes in Cape Town are typically 500–800mm deep — comfortably below our 200–300mm grinding depth. If you know of shallow services (irrigation pipes, outdoor electrical), mark them with flags before our arrival. We carry R5M public liability insurance covering accidental underground service damage.
